Kutch is a district in Gujarat, in Western India, with many craft traditions ranging from metalwork, pottery, leather work, to weaving, printing, dyeing, and embroidery. We spent one very inspirational day in the villages of Kutch, visiting many homes that still had working landlooms inside, or leather artisans making sandals to sell. There are a dozen or so different types of traditional embroidery techniques I learned about. Non-profits like Shrujan and Kala Raksha are working to preserve these stunning traditions in Gujarat. Click through this album for a selection of snapshots of my visit there.
